Prophet Salih was sent to the people of Thamud, who lived in the region of Hijr. The Thamud were known for carving homes out of mountains and possessing great wealth and power. Despite their blessings, they were arrogant and worshipped idols.
Allah sent Salih to guide them back to the worship of Allah alone.
“And to Thamud [We sent] their brother Salih. He said, ‘O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. He has produced you from the earth, and settled you in it, so ask forgiveness of Him and then repent to Him. Indeed, my Lord is near and responsive.’” — Qur’an 11:61
Salih’s mission shows the importance of calling people to truth, despite their pride and disbelief.
Salih’s Call to the Thamud People 📢
Salih warned the Thamud about their corruption, reminding them that their abilities and wealth were gifts from Allah, not a sign of superiority.
“He said, ‘O my people, this is Allah’s she-camel, a sign for you. So let her graze in Allah’s earth, and do not touch her with harm, or a painful punishment will seize you.’” — Qur’an 7:73-74
The camel was a miracle and a test for the Thamud. It demonstrated Allah’s power and mercy, offering them a chance to repent.
“Do not wrong her, and do not deny the favour of Allah. Will you not then fear Him?” — Qur’an 7:74
The Arrogance and Rejection of the Thamud People ❌
Despite clear signs and miracles, most of the Thamud were stubborn and disobedient. They plotted to harm the she-camel, mocking Salih’s warnings.
“And they hamstrung her, and defied the command of their Lord. Thus, the punishment overtook them while they were wrongdoers.” — Qur’an 7:78
Their arrogance blinded them to the truth, and they refused to submit to Allah’s message.
“But they denied him and hamstrung the she-camel, and they were destroyed by a mighty blast.” — Qur’an 26:155-158
Salih’s Patience and Prophethood ⏳
Salih is remembered in the Qur’an as a prophet who remained steadfast and patient despite opposition. He continually called his people to repentance, showing wisdom and courage.
“Salih said, ‘O my people, this is a she-camel of Allah, a sign for you. So leave her to drink in Allah’s earth, and do not touch her with evil, or a painful punishment will seize you.’” — Qur’an 27:45
Salih’s trust in Allah and his unwavering commitment serve as an example for all believers.
The Punishment of the Disbelievers ⚡
After rejecting Salih’s message and harming the she-camel, the Thamud were destroyed by a sudden earthquake or blast, as decreed by Allah.
“Then the earthquake seized them, and they lay lifeless in their homes. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who believe.” — Qur’an 7:78
Only the believers who followed Salih were saved by Allah’s mercy.
